Dr. Derek Shendell's Curriculum Vitae
UMDNJ - School of Public Health: Dr. Derek G. Shendell
Dr. Shendell works to “bridge” science, education and policy in a multidisciplinary fashion through school (K-12) and community-based participatory research with local participation in planning and execution to reduce and/or prevent environmental exposures and adverse health effects. He focuses on school-aged children and their caregivers as well as older adults; indoor residential and school environments and adjacent outdoor sources; field and lab-based personal and area sampling method development and validation for emerging biological (fungi), chemical (phthalates, etc) and physical (noise, heat) agents of concern; educational trainings and materials, service and technical assistance; and, informed/evidence-based policy advocacy. His most recent research and professional publications have focused on: school environments, including indoor air and environmental quality and occupational safety and health pertaining to injury surveillance; urban outdoor air quality and environment characterization, including near-roadway and agricultural community fine particles and toxic air contaminants; ventilation and energy efficiency, and linkages to student attendance; and, asthma among children and older adults.
