About
EOHSI
The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences
Institute (EOHSI) sponsors research, education and service programs in
a setting that fosters interaction among experts in environmental health,
toxicology, occupational health, exposure assessment, public policy, and
health education. It houses a select group of scientists, physicians,
educators, and policy researchers who focus on the serious health effects
of environmental pollutants. EOHSI members serve as advisors to international,
national, state and local organizations on various public health issues.

Institute members investigate
ways people are exposed to chemicals, study how chemicals react in the
body, educate the public about risks from chemical exposure, and assist
in formulating policies to protect human health. Established in 1986,
the institute is jointly sponsored by the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
and Rutgers,
The State University of New Jersey.

The major objectives of the institute are to:
- Advance the understanding
of the mechanisms by which environmental and occupational chemical exposures
impact human health
- Advance understanding of
impacts of chemical mixtures and interactions of chemical exposures
with other biological and psychological risk factors
- Identification and measurement
of human environmental and occupational chemical exposures
- Treatment of populations
adversely affected by chemical exposures
- Development of educational
tools describing relative risks of chemical exposures
- Development of public policies
related to environmental and occupational chemical risks
- Training programs for environmental
health professionals
EOHSI
