JGPT: The Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology
Prospective Students

Objectives of the Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology

A. To offer an educational program leading to the M.S. and/or Ph.D. degrees in Toxicology.

B. To foster excellence in research in Toxicology within the participating universities.

C. To offer students a curriculum which provides a well-rounded, contemporary education in general toxicology, and the opportunity for in-depth studies in specialty areas of their choosing.

D. To make available research topics for the original thesis project which is a requirement for the degrees. It is essential that these topics should address significant mechanistic problems in modern toxicology and that they should be performed at the highest possible level of scientific excellence.

E. To achieve these aims in a collegial, multidisciplinary atmosphere which includes public health, occupational medicine, epidemiology, risk assessment and public policy.

The most important component of the JGPT is the student body. JGPT alumni occupy positions in academic institutions, consulting firms, government, and industry. Research by our students has received recognition by local and national professional societies and governmental agencies.

The Rutgers Association of Toxicology Students (RATS) acts as both a professional and social organization for the students. This group meets regularly to provide information, plan activities, and discuss the program. They elect representatives to the various standing committees of the JGPT and, thereby, participate in the evolving policies and programs of the program. Suggestions and comments by students regarding any aspect of the program are encouraged by the faculty. The current President of the RATS is Daniella Urbach-Ross. Questions regarding graduate student life can be addressed to Daniella Urbach-Ross or Bernadine Chmielowicz.
