Renal elimination of drugs,
xenobiotics and toxins are necessary for the
survival of mammalian species. This process
is mediated by vectorial transport from
blood into the urine through the cooperative
function of specific transporters in the
basolateral and apical membranes of the
proximal tubule epithelium. The long term
goal of Dr. You's research is to elucidate
the molecular and functional characteristics
of these transporters, their implications in
human physiology and diseases, and their
applications to drug therapy. Currently, her
research focuses on 1) the structure and
function relationships of a group of organic
anion transporters (OAT) involved in the
drug elimination process, and 2) their
short-term and long-term regulatory
mechanisms. Techniques in molecular biology,
biochemistry, and biophysics are used to
analyze the transport mechanisms. The
knowledge gained from these studies will be
invaluable toward the rational design of
novel drugs and inhibitors to optimize drug
therapy while avoid unwanted drug
interactions. These studies will also
provide fundamental important mechanistic
information applicable to the whole family
of OAT-like transporters. |
