The focus of the research laboratory is on neurodegenerative diseases with a particular emphasis on Parkinson’s disease. There are 4 major areas of investigation within the laboratory. A) Model development is seeking to develop and characterize chronic, progressive PD models that better recapitulate disease pathology and advancement. B) Environmental agents and neuronal cell damage is examining a variety of pesticides and fungicides for their effects on dopamine neurons and the underlying mechanisms of toxicity. C) Mechanisms governing the selectivity of degeneration in PD is examining the contribution of dopamine and its metabolites in enhancing the susceptibility of the dopamine neurons to cell damage. D) Cellular mechanisms of toxicity in PD is examining the various roles for glutathione and how glutathione loss in PD contributes to dopamine cell damage. Strategies to elevate brain levels of glutathione are being explored. |
